Pretty Pictures (and a Time-Lost Middle Finger)

August 27, 2013 // 0 Comments

The day job continues to be super-busy, and I haven’t been able to write this week. So instead, I thought I’d share a few pretty pictures… First up, we have a pretty kick-ass drawing of Jack Kirby’s Etrigan the Demon, by Ramon Villalobos: I dig it. That’d be a cool t-shirt, that would. DC, take freaking notice! If you’d like to see more of Villalobos’ work, check out his Tumblr here: New Cool Meat. There’s some nice work there, stuff that puts [...]

Dork Awards: The 25 Greatest Super Heroes of All Time (Part Three)

June 27, 2013 // 2 Comments

Continuing our countdown of the 25 Greatest Super Heroes of All Time! Part One can be found here, with Part Two here. Go back to get caught up, or dive in below… We’re down to the top five now, and that seems like something of a watershed moment to me. The tension I’ve felt throughout the list between quality of story, quality of concept, and historical importance really ramped up with these characters, and I struggled with what order to put them in. One of them wasn’t [...]

A Good and Decent Man (of Steel)

Man of Steel by Christopher Nolan, David Goyer, Zack Snyder, and a bunch of other Hollywood people So I went to see the new Superman movie this weekend. Really enjoyed it. It’s not a perfect film, by far. It’s written in full epic movie style, with all the overblown melodrama that implies. But I like its approach to the super hero genre. It has a contemplative tone and hard-hitting action, and it treats Superman’s very familiar power set as an object of awe and wonder. [...]

Matters of Perspective

January 21, 2013 // 0 Comments

So the new year’s been a long one thus far here on the nerd farm. Too much to tend to, not enough time to write. That’s less true now, though it may be another week yet before we’re back up to the rate of posting we were at last year. But a window of opportunity has opened, and I thought it might be nice to get caught up on all the funnybooks that have come out the last couple-three weeks. Or at least the more interesting ones. Or whatever I’ve got energy for. Which is [...]

Funny Little Gods

Action Comics #15, by Grant Morrison, Rags Morales, Brad Walker, Andrew Hennessy, and Mark Propst As we near the end of Grant Morrison’s Action Comics, the shape– or should I say, color– of things is finally becoming clear. We’ve known about the 5th-Dimensional interference in Superman’s affairs for a few issues now, and I was guessing at it long before that. But with this issue, we get the whole story, and everything falls into place. Not to get all SPOILERY on [...]
