Recent Dorkiness

Funnybooks and YouTubes

So the day job’s still kicking my ass this week, and that means it’s time for another collection of random stuff. Since I did still images last week, I thought I might direct your attention to some of them fancy MOVIN’ pictures this time out. All funnybook related, of course…

First up, I’d like to direct your attention to the 2000 AD THRILLCAST! This week, they’re interviewing quite the murderer’s row of British comics artists: Brian Bolland, Dave Gibbons, and Mick McMahon!

Next up… Straight outta Pittsburgh comes what is, for my money, the best comics podcast in the world: CARTOONIST KAYFABE! Cartoonists Ed Piskor and Jim Rugg post multiple videos a week, covering old issues of Wizard Magazine, spotlighting their favorite comics, going through boxes of comics sent to them by their adoring fans, or doing shoot interviews with comics luminaries like Steve Bissette, Brendan McCarthy, Howard Chaykin, and (this week) no less a superstar than Mark Millar. My favorite episode of recent vintage, though, is their deep dive into the Absolute Edition of Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli’s Batman: Year One.

Next… A short documentary about David Boswell, creator of one of the greatest comics of all time: Reid Fleming, World’s Toughest Milkman! It’s called I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO SHUT UP!

Recently resurfacing (and maybe gone again before you know it) is the classic 1988 documentary COMIC BOOK CONFIDENTIAL. It’s a fascinating look at major figures from across comics history, from Jack Kirby to Will Eisner to Robert Crumb to Charles Burns to Jaime Hernandez. Stan Lee even horns in on the action! If you’ve never seen it, it’s well-worth a watch.

And, hey… As long as we’re on the subject of Comic Book Confidential… Here’s the Cartoonist Kayfabe Commentary Track for it. If, you know, you’ve got two computers to run them on at the same time…

Alright. Hopefully, that’ll hold you over for a while. The Thrillcast and Cartoonist Kayfabe, alone, offer hours and hours of entertainment. So I’ll leave you with that. And here’s to hoping that next week, I’ll finally have time to bore you with my own ramblings, instead of someone else’s…
