Funnybook RIP: Al Feldstein and Dick Ayers

Been a little busy around the nerd farm of late, but I didn’t want to let this week get past me without acknowledging the deaths of two comparatively unsung comics greats: Al Feldstein and Dick Ayers. While I don’t have the time, or the knowledge, to properly eulogize the two of them, I thought I would celebrate their work with a gallery of art.

First up is Feldstein. He’s most widely known for his work on Mad magazine, but my favorite Feldstein stuff is his pre-Mad EC Comics work. I’m especially fond of his bizarre designs for alien creatures…

And as for Dan Adkins… I primarily knew him as an inker, seeing his name on many comics over the years and always appreciating the clean, classic lines. As an artist in his own right, he’s mostly remembered as being a solid draftsman. But I think it’s important to remember that he not only created the distinctive look of original Ghost Rider…

…but he also took on the impossible task of following Steve Ditko on Dr. Strange…
