For the lucky 13th day of Halloween, we thought we’d take a break from our virtual Halloween mix tape to bring you… our real Halloween mix tape! This is an annual tradition here on the nerd farm, a little something we put together every holiday season to give the nerd wranglers something to listen to while they sincere the punkin patches up.
This year, we decided to put together a mix based around the theme of Halloween Love Songs. Love comes in all shapes and sizes, after all, some of which are very unwholesome indeed. And it is to these sick, twisted, and diseased kinds of love that we dedicate this year’s mix.
The title: Haunted Love.
(A special retroactive thanks to Charlton Comics for publishing a funnybook with the very title we came up with. One of the more pleasantly surprising Google search experiences we’ve ever had…)
Here’s the tracklist:1. Southern Culture on the Skids – Zombified 2. Zombie Ghost Train – Graveyard Queen 3. The Merry Widows – The Bride 4. Zombie Ghost Train – Step into My Coffin 5. The Deadlines – Darlin Darlin 6. Trailer Bride – Ghost on the Highway 7. Tegan & Sara – Walking With a Ghost 8. Southern Culture on the Skids – Torture 9. Unknown Hinson – In the Trunk of My Cadillac Car 10. Voltaire – Dead Girls 11. Fabienne Del Sol – I’m Gonna Haunt You 12. Rachel Brooke – The Barnyard 13. The Drowning Lovers – Kill Her 14. Nina Simone – I Put a Spell on You 15. Kip Tyler – She’s My Witch 16. Tom Waits – Alice 17. Shane MacGowan – Haunted 18. Nick Cave – Where the Wild Roses Grow 19. Tom Waits – I’ll Shoot the Moon
For those of you who’ve never experienced one of our mixes before… The music tends to be a bit eclectic (read: ranges all over), but we do strive for smooth transitions between the various styles. This is also a mix for grown-ups. Any parental units reading this can make their own decisions about whether or not it’s suitable listening for their spawn, but it’s not something we even take into consideration. I mean, I doubt any of it would scar someone for life, but there’s songs about necrophilia and graveyard sex on this thing, too, so…
For those of you who HAVE experienced our mixes before… It’s a heady mix this year, with maybe a little less comedy and a little more sick desperation. There’s also no less than three repeating artists on it, which we try to avoid. But the demands of the theme forced our hands. Biggest regret: not being able to make Johnny Cash’s great “Delia’s Gone” fit into the sound mix. There just wasn’t a good transition for it, though, so it had to go.
So I hope you enjoy the mix, and– What’s that? How do you get it? Look in the comments below…
